Use Piazza for most communication with course staff, including homework and programming assignment questions, concerns about missed quizzes, and grading questions. Please use public posts for questions on the assignments or general course content. If you have logistical or grading concerns, send a private message to all instructors for the fastest response. For a sensitive concern, send a message exclusively to Prof. Malladi. See the absence and extension policies below for specific requests.
All course accommodations proceed through the Office for Students with Disabilities (OSD). Initiate the process as early as possible. Once your letter has been shared electronically, contact Prof. Malladi privately and the CSE department’s OSD liaison to arrange implementation. Please follow any advance-notice requirements in your AFA letter. You do not need to disclose your diagnosis or send medical documentation to course staff.
How your grade is determined
The course and its grading scheme are designed so that using generative AI tools cannot substitute for personal understanding. Quizzes directly test your understanding of the lectures, homeworks, and/or programming assignments in the prior week. If you find the content difficult, post on Piazza; staff may use this feedback to adjust grading and subsequent assignments. Your course score is the weighted average of these four categories:
- Homeworks and programming assignments
- 10%
- Quizzes, after dropping the lowest score
- 30%
- Midterm
- 30%
- Course project
- 30%

The instructor may curve course grades upward, but will never curve them downward.
Homework deadlines and quizzes
Deadlines will be stated at the top of each assignment. Late homework will receive a 25% deduction on the total points for each day it is late.
Absences and extensions
Course staff reserves the right to introduce extensions to mitigate technical or logistical issues.
Ordinary delays
Competing deadlines, travel, and routine technical problems follow the homework late policy and do not ordinarily qualify for penalty-free extensions.
Illness and emergencies
If illness or a serious unexpected circumstance prevents you from completing work, request a penalty-free extension through a private Piazza message to Prof. Malladi as early as possible. If you are comfortable doing so, please message the entire staff on Piazza so we can handle your request in a timely manner. Identify the affected work, briefly explain the impact, and propose a new deadline. Showing partially completed work can help us assess your request. Do not send diagnoses or medical records.
Staff will work with you on a reasonable timeline and may refer the case to other university offices as needed.
Missed quizzes
Discussion attendance is mandatory. A missed quiz receives zero and is eligible for the one-score drop; no explanation is needed to use that drop. For further extenuating circumstances, please send a message to the instructors via Piazza.
Academic integrity, collaboration, and AI
Do the work that helps you learn. We may randomly spot-check a subset of students to test their understanding of a submission or its underlying concepts. The course staff takes academic integrity extremely seriously, with no lenience on violations. Suspected violations are handled through UC San Diego’s academic integrity process.
- Ungraded assignments: All resources, collaboration, and AI are allowed. Try problems independently first to identify gaps in your preparation.
- Programming assignments and homeworks: Do not exchange complete solutions or copy another student’s code. You may use AI assistance for high-level brainstorming about the problem, but you cannot use it to write any of the code, math, or text that you ultimately submit. This also means you cannot copy AI-generated outputs and submit them. Follow assignment-specific restrictions on the libraries and outside resources allowed. You are responsible for understanding and being able to explain everything you submit.
- Quizzes and midterm: Work individually, without collaboration, AI, internet access, or outside assistance.
- Team project: Collaboration and AI-use policies for the design, experiments, and report will be announced when the project is released.
Submission, template, feedback, and regrades
Homeworks and programming assignments are submitted and graded through Gradescope.
All homework assignments must be submitted using the LaTeX template.
Download the template from the schedule or here, fill in your answers, compile to PDF, and submit the compiled PDF file.
Do not submit `.tex` source files or other formats.
Midterm regrade requests are allowed. If you request a regrade on one question, staff will regrade the entire midterm and adjust your score accordingly.
